The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
