Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
