A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind assisted us locate the footage.

Our team is analyzing images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
